We like new car dealers, but sometimes they tell new car buyers something that...well...just isn't quite true. They have been known to say that adding an aftermarket alarm or other aftermarket parts can void the vehicle's warranty, when in fact this statement may be in flagrant violation of Federal law! Just to clear the air, here are the facts:

Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act, a vehicle manufacturer may not make it's vehicle warranty conditional on the use of any brand of security system unless the manufacturer provides the system free of charge or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has specifically published thatonly the vehicle manufacturer's product may be used. To challenge a false claim, ask the person to put it in writing, or request the vehicle manufacruter's security system free of charge. If you are charged for the factory system, or they refuse to give you a written statement, there may be a violation of Federal law.
